Privacy policy
Last updated October 23, 2026
Tickmarks collects only what it needs to run a class: who you are, which class you're in, and what you do inside a case. We don't sell it, and we don't use advertising or analytics trackers.
Who we are
Tickmarks is operated by Alton Henley. Questions about this policy or your data go to admin@playtickmarks.com.
What we collect
When you join or sign in
- Your name and email address.
- Your role (student or instructor) and the classes you belong to.
- One-time sign-in links. We store only a scrambled version, and each link expires after a few minutes.
While you work a case
- Every records request you make: the text you typed, how it was interpreted, any corrections you made, the hours charged, and which documents were produced.
- The parties you uncover, the answers you submit (including wrong ones), the hints you use, and your score.
- When each of these happened, so your instructor can see your progress and whether work was late.
On the free trial
- The same as above: your name, email and your work on the free cases.
- If you ask for the full library, the date you asked.
For instructors
- The classes you create, their join codes, and the cases you assign, with budgets and due dates.
Case documents are fictional. Nothing you download from a case contains anyone's real financial information.
How we use it
- To sign you in and keep your account secure, including limiting repeated sign-in attempts.
- To run the game: deciding what records you can request, producing documents, and scoring answers.
- To show your instructor your progress, requests and answers for the cases they assigned.
- To improve how Tickmarks understands plain-English requests. Administrators review the text of requests so the request parser can learn new phrasing.
- To find and fix errors in the service.
- If you're on the free trial and ask for the full library, to reply to you about access. We don't send marketing email otherwise.
Who can see it
- Your instructor sees your name, email, and all activity in the classes and cases they run, and can export it as a spreadsheet. On the free trial, the trial is run by Tickmarks, so only Tickmarks administrators see your work.
- Tickmarks administrators can see account and activity data to operate and support the service.
- Other students can't see your activity.
Services we rely on
We use these providers to run Tickmarks. Each handles data only to provide its service to us.
| Provider | What it does | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Heroku | Hosts the application | All requests to the site |
| Neon | Database | Accounts, classes and case activity |
| Resend | Sends email | Your email address and the sign-in links we send |
| Cloudinary | Stores case documents | Fictional case files only |
| Sentry | Error reporting, when enabled | Technical details of errors, such as the page and browser |
| Heroku Key-Value Store | Limits repeated sign-in attempts | IP addresses and email addresses, briefly, to count attempts |
| Google Fonts, unpkg, jsDelivr | Fonts and page scripts | Your IP address, when your browser loads them |
The application and its database are hosted in the United States. Other providers may process data in other countries.
How we protect it
- The site is served only over encrypted connections, and its cookies can't be read by page scripts.
- Sign-in links work once and expire after a few minutes. There are no passwords to leak.
- Case documents download through links that expire within minutes, and only for records you've requested.
- Answer keys stay on our servers. Your answers are checked there, never in your browser.
How long we keep it
We keep account and activity data until it's deleted on request. Expired sign-in links stay on file in their scrambled form and can no longer be used.
Your choices
- See or correct your data. Email admin@playtickmarks.com.
- Delete your data. Ask us, or ask your instructor to ask us. Deleting a student account permanently removes the account and all its class enrollments, requests, answers and scores. Your instructor will no longer see your work.
Children
Tickmarks is designed for college students and adult learners. It is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
